Why businesses need to consider what’s up with using WhatsApp in the workplace

More than half of people in the UK – almost 40 million - now use WhatsApp regularly, with many also using it in the workplace.

It’s easy to see why. As an instant messaging tool WhatsApp is incredibly user-friendly. It can be used for everything from arranging social events to reporting an absence, and in some cases for more serious confidential, commercial information sharing.

She graduated with a First Class Scots Law (LLB) degree from the University of Strathclyde and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice from the University of Glasgow.

A leading data protection expert at full-service legal firm Thorntons Law has reflected on the UK Government’s plans to introduce digital verification to help the public share details about themselves.

The proposals form part of a new Digital Information and Smart Data Bill, introduced as part of the King’s Speech (Wednesday 17 July, 2024). The Government said the Bill, which will apply across the UK, will harness the power of data for economic growth.

Lilac is a Data Protection Services Assistant based in our Edinburgh office.

Working closely alongside Morgan O’Neill and Naomi Blyth, Lilac provides practical support to the Data Protection Team on matters such as onboarding clients to our outsourced DPO service and handling Data Subject Access Requests and redaction activities on behalf of our DPO clients.

Before joining Thorntons, Lilac worked as a legal assistant for both a Solicitor Advocate and in-house at an international fashion brand.

Naomi Blyth

Based in our Edinburgh office and working with Morgan O’Neill, Naomi is a Data Protection Officer advising clients on all aspects of data protection compliance. She has extensive experience in advising on individuals’ rights, managing personal data breaches, conducting privacy impact assessments and delivering bespoke data protection training.

Thorntons Solicitor Gains Data Protection Certification

A partner at leading Scottish law firm, Thorntons, has been named a Certified Specialist in Data Protection by the Law Society of Scotland.

The accreditation means Loretta Maxfield has demonstrated that she has achieved the essential level of expertise in data protection and passed examinations set out and accredited by the Law Society.

The Director of Data Protection Services at full service law firm Thorntons has recently passed her Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) exam, complimenting her position as a Certified Information Privacy Manager and further strengthening the credentials of the firm’s Intellectual Property, Technology and Media Team.

Thorntons appoints its first non-legal director for fresh data protection focus

Full service law firm Thorntons has appointed Morgan O’Neill as its new Director of Data Protection Services – the first role of its kind at the firm.

Morgan will work within the Intellectual Property, Technology and Media team across Thorntons’ Edinburgh and Dundee offices, and will advise clients across all firm locations, based on her specialised expertise in this sector.

She is accredited as a Certified Information Privacy Manager by the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
