As the festive season approaches, celebrations will be taking place across the country for a number of holidays such as Diwali, New Year’s Eve and Chinese New Year. The next date in the diary being Bonfire Night on 5th November 2024.
Each year, spectators enjoy watching the sky light up on 5th November with the spectacle of a colourful fireworks display. This year, if you are planning to attend a public fireworks display or host your own in your back garden, it is important to remember that fireworks can be extremely dangerous and can cause serious personal injury if care is not taken.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has published up to date statistics as a reminder of how dangerous fireworks can be. With this being one of the busiest periods of the year for the emergency services in Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reported that crews attended more than 1,300 related incidents in the three days leading up to Bonfire Night last year.
More than ten people per day required emergency hospital treatment for fireworks-related injuries in Scotland on and around Bonfire Night last year; the majority of which were children under sixteen years old. Fireworks and sparklers present a particular risk of burn injuries and damage to the senses, such as sight and hearing, which can often leave permanent damage.
It is important to be aware of the risks and act sensibly when around fireworks. Only adults should handle fireworks and they should be used in a clear, open space away from children. If handling fireworks yourself, consider the advice published in the Firework Code, such as never returning to a firework once it is lit and always having a bucket of water nearby.
