The data protection legislative landscape continues to evolve, with other countries adopting robust data protection laws. China's Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL), which came into force on 1 November 2022, is a principle-based law similar to the UK GDPR and provides a range of rights to data subjects. While there are similarities to the UK GDPR, there are also distinct differences. The law places obligations on organisations processing the personal data of individuals in the territory of People's Republic of China e.g. this is highly relevant to the UK education sector where China is often a key territory for recruitment of students, as well as other organisations who conduct business in China.
