Arbroath FC Community Trust has distributed 289 coats through its annual winter clothing collection to those in need across the region – a 400% increase from the previous year.
The Cosy Coats initiative sees Arbroath Football Club Community Trust, supported by law firm Thorntons, collect donations of unwanted and unused coats, jackets, hats and scarves in good condition to be redistributed in Angus.
Arbroath FC Community Trust identifies families and individuals who would benefit from receiving the clothing as well as processing referrals from individuals, local schools, early year providers and community groups. Amongst the 289 donations, 83% supported people in Arbroath and 17% in surrounding towns of Angus including Forfar, Brechin, Montrose and Carnoustie.
One recipient of the campaign said: "The coats provided were thicker, heavier, waterproof and warmer than the thinner coats the children were wearing. They have been much appreciated given the storms we have experienced."
The campaign continues with donations being collected at Gayfield Park and Thorntons Solicitors’ offices in Arbroath, Montrose and Forfar until the end of March. It will then restart in October after a summer break.
Georgia Carter, Community Development Coordinator at Arbroath FC Community Trust said: “The positive response across Angus and the generosity of our local community has been truly heartwarming. Reflecting on the success of this year’s campaign, it’s fantastic we’ve been able to help so many families but it’s also a sad reality that many more families remain in need.
“The gratitude from everyone we’ve supported and the genuine help we’ve provided is a great motivator for me and my fellow volunteers to continue this project.”
David Mathieson, Partner at Thorntons Solicitors said: “We’ve witnessed the difference these contributions make to the lives of those in need across our local Angus community.
“We’re proud to partner with Arbroath FC Community Trust, making our own donations and providing additional drop-off locations which has helped the campaign collect more items than ever before. We’d encourage those who are able to make a donation before the end of March.”
